In March of 2107, we took a major step forward by announcing a significant change to the chicken in our supply chain.
In a unique partnership with Mercy for Animals, we became the first Canadian food service company to commit to using healthier strains of chickens, improved living conditions, and more humane processing, leading to improved lives for millions of broiler chickens across the country each year.
These new care standards were developed by leading animal protection agencies throughout North America including: Mercy for Animals; The Humane Society of the United States/Humane Society International; Compassion in World Farming; and the Humane League, and were codified as the new broiler welfare requirements of Global Animal Partnership (GAP), an international non-profit farmed animal welfare certification program.
The standards will ensure that all chickens in our supply system have improved environments, including light levels, litter and enrichments and are processed in a humane manner using a multi-step controlled-atmosphere processing system. In addition, by 2024, demonstrated compliance with these standards via a third-party auditing system will be a contractual requirement for any company supplying chickens to Compass Group Canada.
