Compass Group Canada Recognized with a Second Harvest Food Rescue Award

In Canada, roughly 46.5% of all food produced is lost or wasted every year. It’s a staggering number — but for us at Compass Group Canada, it’s also a call to action.

That’s why receiving the Impact Award at the Annual Food Rescue Awards hosted by Second Harvest means so much to our team. It’s a national honour celebrating organizations that go above and beyond to rescue surplus edible food and redirect it to people who truly need it. But more than an award, it’s a reflection of something our people have believed and acted on every single day: good food should never go to waste when there are communities that need it most.

Every year, our teams serve millions of meals across various sectors, from healthcare to education; corporate offices to sports and entertainment venues, and more. That scale brings enormous responsibility — and enormous opportunity. Because wherever food is prepared in volume, there is also the potential for surplus. Rather than accept waste as an unavoidable cost of doing business, we made a commitment: find a better way.

Through thoughtful food rescue initiatives and a powerful partnership with Second Harvest, Canada’s largest food rescue organization, we’ve built systems that transform surplus meals into something truly meaningful.

Our Steamplicity donation program is one of the most powerful examples of that commitment in action — and the numbers tell a remarkable story. Since launching in 2024, the program has:

  • Donated more than 115,000 meals
  • Generated over $450,000 in food value
  • Prevented approximately 300,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions

To put that into perspective, 115,000 meals is enough to feed a sold-out Rogers Centre crowd twice over. And 300,000 kg of emissions prevented is the equivalent of taking hundreds of cars off the road for a year.

Our relationship with Second Harvest has been central to making all of this possible. Their expertise, networks, and infrastructure have helped us scale our food rescue efforts far beyond what we could achieve alone, connecting our surplus food with the communities and families who need it most.

Together, we’re not just rescuing meals. We’re helping to reshape the way the food industry thinks about waste, responsibility, and what it truly means to be a good corporate citizen.

None of this happens without people who care deeply. Behind every meal, every reusable container, and every partnership is a Compass Group Canada associate who chose to show up and make a difference. From kitchen teams coordinating donations to leaders championing change at every level, this award belongs to all of them. Their dedication is what makes sustainability not just a strategy, but a way of life.

This recognition inspires us, but it also motivates us to keep going. To innovate more, to rescue more, to partner more boldly, and to never stop asking how we can do better. Because at Compass Group Canada, sustainability isn’t a destination we’re working toward. It’s who we are, reflected in every meal we serve and every decision we make.
